Hilary Owers: Work in Progress
firstsite @ The Minories Garden Café
Open 3 - 31 October 2007
Monday - Saturday 10am - 4.30pm
firstsite are delighted to present an exhibition of new work by Hilary Owers, an artist based at Cuckoo Farm Studios in Colchester.
The three series’ of work represented here have been developed by the artist over the last few months. They demonstrate a new direction in her practice; previously producing highly skilled drawings and studies of individual natural objects - feathers, cacti, stones - she has recently taken time in her studio to return to the fundamentals of mark-making.
In these pieces, Owers adopts an almost ‘back to basics’ approach. Beginning with large, durational pencil and graphite exercises she moved to explorations in acrylic, before introducing different papers and oil pastels. There is a loose landscape feeling but this is not intentional, instead the compositions have evolved organically through medium.
The process of creating these drawings has been a significant one for the artist and she is excited about the possibilities and new territories they may lead to. As works in progress they visually describe the freedom Owers felt by focusing on developing her work and simply making marks.
