In July 2007 Linda Theophilus was selected as a studio holder at Cuckoo Farm Studios on the outskirts of Colchester, her first in a group setting.

This exhibition White Weight presents new work made in that studio over the past year, and includes drawing, 3 dimensional textiles, and video.

The centre piece of the show is an evolving installation.

The title White Weight has a number of connotations for Theophilus. Faced with the pristine white walls of her new studio, she felt a certain anxiety - and pleasurable pressure - to ‘make work’. A weight on her mind - but a light, exciting weight.

For her, the term also refers to that point of perfect balance which allows two objects, however heavy, to swing free, to become apparently weightless. Similarly in human relations, there is a moment of sudden realisation that one has ‘met one’s match’ whether physically, when pitched against the elements, or combatively, professionally, or romantically; a moment of stillness before the exertion to succeed, overcome or be subsumed.

The evolving installation takes a repetitive act, the on-going domestic task of ironing, to mark the passing of time. The two main elements of the piece hang in balance,– a huge net of crumpled household linens counter-balanced by a large bag of salt. Over the week, the linen will be ironed, and the bags will empty, leaving two white piles on the floor.
