'The history of landscape painting is as important to me as its future.'

We are affected greatly by the landscape around us both familiar and unfamiliar. We can respond to it with awe, nostalgia, revulsion, fear, longing, interest, suspicion and sometimes total indifference. My work is an exploration of our interaction with our surroundings, looking at the notion that landscape is about more than what we see.

I love working with different painting processes and digital imagery. But all is rooted in painting, and landscapes of all kinds are always my inspiration.

Recently I began a series of works where the painting technique and materials used will show visions of a landscape that is very different for those of us who live here, than to those for whom the mention of “Essex” brings an entirely different picture to mind. By combining traditional techniques with far less traditional colours and incorporating glitter, gems, foils and spraypaint, I am challenging the viewer to look through the widely-held preconceptions of Essex aesthetic, to the real beauty of the county.
