Tracey Johnson

Statement

  • Tracey Johnson’s work is inspired mostly by the landscape. Space, weather, season, colour, foliage, light and texture all play their part.

Tracey spends time sketching, painting and taking photographs on location in the landscape of the Essex/Suffolk borders. This provides her with a rich variety of source material and a starting point for her work.

Tracey experiments with the material qualities of oil paint by pouring, flicking, scraping and layering with all manner of implements ranging from draft excluders to bare fingers. She works freely and intuitively manipulating, guiding, persuading, controlling, encouraging and forcing the paint until it evokes an experience, an emotion, a moment, a memory. This is a growing process where the evolving painting develops and transforms mimicking the cycle of the natural world.

Tracey regularly teaches adult painting classes and workshops. During the summer months she takes groups of painters out ‘plein air’ painting.
