2022-23 Graduate Awardee

I have just graduated from studying for a BA in Fine Art at Colchester Institute and was selected for the Graduate Award Scheme 2022-2023. My practice is mainly 3 dimensional. I have been experimenting with different materials including wood, metal, ceramic, plaster, paper, etc.  Apart from my art practice, I am also a Tai-Chi instructor, Mandarin teacher, Origami tutor, film extra and meditator.

Yu’s sculptures celebrate the simplicity and beauty of abstract forms using basic materials, such as wood, ceramic and plaster.

In her most recent works, one form appears again and again - a shape inspired by her personal meditation experience that refers to infinite loops and the Möbius strip.

Yu’s sculptures invite audiences to walk around them and view from their own perspectives. The work encourages audiences from different cultures and backgrounds to investigate and experience the relationship between space and form; visible and invisible; smooth and rough; man-made and natural; infinity and reality; materiality and abstraction.

Yu's work aspires to use simple forms and materials to reflect something often hard to show in this material world.
