Nicholas Rowe BA (Hons) LSDC

Nicholas is an artist/craftsperson working in wood.  His material sensitive approach creates work where character and provenance are central

Profile Gallery

Nicholas has always been making in one form or another. This led him to study a multitude of materials and processes. Finding an aptitude for woodturning using reclaimed, seasoned and green wood. He became concerned about the sustainability and provenance of his materials and consciously obtains most of his wood and clay from local sources.

Nicholas describes his philosophy as "I turn some pieces whilst the wood is still wet, allow to distort naturally and leave them deliberately unsanded and tool finished. I save the waste wood shavings and mix them with the unrefined Gestingthorpe clays. By incorporating the shavings from it's wooden counterpart I reduce the environmental impact and allow the unique textures and voids of larger surfaces more scope to reveal themselves. A symbiotic relationship is created between the ceramic and wooden vessel by sharing materials and companion profiles".

Since graduating Nicholas has sort to expand his skills by turning a variety of woods and forms that allow the material's visual and tactile qualities to be appreciated, with emphasis on functionality and aesthetics over the long term. Nicholas successfully applied for the 2015 Cuckoo Farm Studios Graduate Award. Since joining the supportive community at CFS he has felt confident to push both his wooden forms and mixed ceramic medium. Due to practical considerations he has recently adjourned exploring ceramics and has instead found other sustainable uses for his waste wood shavings.

Nicholas is a Licentiate Member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen (SDC), member of the Colchester Art Society, Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (AWGB) and two local woodturning clubs. He has sold work, fulfilled commissions and has exhibited in London and galleries in and around Colchester.

Exhibitions and Events - Keep an eye here as they appear

(updated 8/01/21)

Planned during this year:

I continue to not participate in any face-to-face exhibitions and events due to COVID-19, this is a personal decision based on the safety to my family, friends & myself. I intend to spend the first half of 2021 developing my work leading to new and more complex works for display/sale in current and new Galleries & Shops as well as Online. I continue to work on commissions which I am enormously grateful for.

This experience has shown to me how I thrive on meeting and discussing my work (and their's) with people as well as encouraging them to handle and experience how tactile my work is. Aspects including texture, weight and natural warmth which you don't experience from looking at a photo.

I look forward to a time when we can meet in person again.

In 2021
