Kay Parker

Studio Holder

2023-24 Graduate Awardee

Parker’s interest in the natural world, specifically the trees and the innumerable lives they sustain. She is fortunate to reside close to woodland, where I can explore the juxtaposition of tranquil woodland sounds alongside that of heavy armoured vehicles or helicopters—the footprints of badgers and deer, alongside the deep trenches created by tanks, inspire thought-provoking sculptures.

A multimedia artist, Parker is inspired by organic forms and textures. An interest in the natural world also involves environmental processes, particularly elements of weather, and she documents the speed and direction of wind together with temperatures, recording moments in time.

I enjoy experimenting with different concepts and materials. My aim is not to create assimilation of an object; I prefer to be unencumbered and unpretentious, to allow the entity to be appreciated for what it is, be it beautiful or strange but, more importantly, thought-provoking. I aim to inspire the viewer's exploration of an art piece; its changing visual aspects generate a thought or emotion. To question its intentionality and evoke meaning, each piece of art is a new and exciting journey for me.
